Announcement about the new ecclesiastical parish of Coberley and Cowley

In October 2017 the Parochial Church Councils (PCCs) Cowleyand Coberley independently voted to start worshiping together and to form a united PCC.

Since this announcement was made just over a year ago the worship and social aspects have proven successful.  However, progress towards completing the legalities has been delayed because of some uncertainty about what financial arrangements would apply.  In July the Head of Finance provided a written statement and in November the Archdeacon of Cheltenham attended a united PCC.  At this meeting another vote was taken with only one person voting against full merger.  Therefore, the Diocesan legal team have moved swiftly to complete the process under the Mission and Pastoral Measure (2011).  On 12th January we received official notification that the new Parish of Coberley and Cowleywill come into being on 1st February 2019.

It hasn’t been an easy process and we are thankful to all those who have contributed in many different ways; not least our Church Warden (by the way Michael Dykes would appreciate having a suitable companion), Treasurers (currently Adrian Montague-Smith and Alan Lowe) as well as our PCC Secretary (Gill Clark).  These new arrangements have already served to revitalise the life of our united congregation and we shall continue to seek God’s way forward for the good of everyone in the new parish.

Please note that the civil parishes and their respective parish councils, Coberley Parish Council andCowley& BirdlipParish Council, which are the first level of local government,  remain unaffected by the ecclesiastical changes and continue to function as completely separate and unrelated organisations..

Revd David Minns (Rector) and Revd Arthur Champion (Resident Priest)
