The report "Destitution in the UK 2020" states that Across the UK, the report says about 2.4 million people experienced destitution in 2019, a 54% increase since the last publication in 2017". Destitution is defined as being unable to have two of these four essentials: shelter, warmth, food and clothing.
The current covid-19 pandemic is causing a crisis which has many far-reaching and unforeseen implications. It’s been heartening to see on social media so many offers of shopping and other practical ways of helping for the elderly, vulnerable and those who need to self-isolate. With children at home now throughout the day there will be increased pressure on our foodbanks.
If you need help - We understands that asking for help doesnt come naturally in our culture but please lay this aside during the covid-19 pandemic. After all who could have foreseen this happening! We invite you to participate in our community response to something that certainly not your fault. It’s okay to ask for or receive help.
If you can help - If you are able to donate but can’t get to a foodbank, please use the Porches of our parish churches as places to drop off tinned or dried food or other essential items (tasty treats are also appreciated). We are now collecting on a regular basis from boxes in the Porches of our nine church buildings. Your donations will be taken regularly to the Cirencester Foodbank.
Pastoral Care
The clergy and Readers are able to provide pastoral care, typically over the telephone. Practical help is available through social media (such as Facebook or the Nextdoor app) but please be aware of safeguarding issues! Churchwardens can sometimes arrange for local support.
